Fear is the sometimes subliminal, sometimes dominant feeling of the present. Fear of the future, fear of losing control, fear of the disintegration of our society. Fear of dictators and dictatorship. Fear of populists and hatred. Fear of war and violence, fear of climate change and the loss of our habitats. Fear is the subject of psychological research and part of all religious revelations. Fear is a complex phenomenon. It is an emotion and a basic human instinct. But how do we ourselves and our society deal with the phenomenon of fear? Are fears currently on the increase? Do they drive us to act or do they paralyse us? In its new group exhibition, the artists' association Walkmühle and its curator duo Christiane Erdmann and Stefanie Blumenbecker explore this socially highly topical and explosive issue from the broader perspective of art. Take a virtual tour of the exhibition: Fear as an exciting exhibition theme When it becomes powerless, fear threatens not only our social but also our individual, inner and spiritual cohesion. However, fear can also lead us to become more vigilant, to recognise dangers in time and avert them by looking for new solutions and bringing about necessary changes. At the beginning of this positive process, however, there must be an awareness of the nature - and recognition of the causes - of our fears. What role can the visual arts play in this process? How is the phenomenon of fear reflected in the works of contemporary international artists? To investigate this, to show as comprehensive an inventory as possible of aspects of fear in the visual arts and to stimulate a process of awareness about the causes and nature of our fears is the core concern of the exhibition project. The theme of the exhibition concerns all parts of society and is quite capable of initiating a social discourse. The phenomenon of fear is again increasingly present in ourselves and in society. It often leads to powerlessness and sullenness, e.g. towards politics, to psychological stress and illness, or to resignation and personal withdrawal. Fear and its consequences threaten social cohesion. In view of the current major challenges and in order to cope with the partly global crises, active action and community cooperation are more necessary than ever. In order to effectively counter fear, we must recognise it individually and socially and become aware of its causes. Only then can we overcome it and effectively combat its causes. Art and culture - and hopefully also this exhibition - can make a social contribution to this realisation. The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive programme of interdisciplinary events on the topic.
