In the tradition of its thematic group exhibitions, the Künstlerverein Walkmühle is devoting this major show to the theme of the forest, which is also the new regional focus of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain and to which numerous cultural institutions are contributing exhibitions, performances, concerts and other activities.
For the exhibition project at the Walkmühle, the two curators Christiane Erdmann and Verena Schmidt selected positions from thirty-one artists and artist duos, some of them renowned, from Germany, but also from Denmark, Israel, the Netherlands and India:

The exhibition title "Between Root and Top" does not describe a static state, but rather an imaginary space that opens up as a network between the individual players in the forest: because the forest is much more than the sum of its trees. In the "in-between", a colorful community lives in a systemic and symbiotic coexistence that is, however, marked by human intervention and therefore challenged in its functionality. In the new exhibition by the Künstlerverein Walkmühle, this living network is presented in fragments through the individual artistic positions. The isolated fragments bear narrative traces, from whose perspective the overall picture of the exhibition theme develops.

Following the questions: What and who lives in the forest? What is the quality of the individual and of togetherness? Or: What function does the forest play in contemporary discourses? – the exhibition also takes a critical look at traditional ideas. The forest as a myth, symbol and utopian place of longing has long been metaphorically exploited. As a result of mankind and climate change, it has become a protagonist in the discourse on the search for new concepts for nature and the natural. In these times of change, new venues are opening up that need to be explored. This exhibition aims to provide a stage for new approaches, stories and fairy tales. From the diversity of the positions on display, an interplay with narrative power unfolds that tells of individuality and community, growth and destruction, process and standstill and of originality in the age of the Anthropocene.

Visitors can expect a diverse and high-caliber exhibition whose individual positions deal with the theme artistically - both humorously and seriously and poetically. In a contemporary range of classical and new media through to immersive video installations, there are plenty of surprises, but of course also the expected, in keeping with the title: Trees.
