> SEITE IN DEUTSCH
The new sound art exhibition curated by Axel Schweppe at the Walkmühle features expansive, partly interactive sound installations and smaller sound objects by British-French artist Will Menter, Cologne-based artist Tina Tonagel, and avant-garde musician and Fluxus artist Joe Jones, who was born in New York and died in Wiesbaden.. This is not Will Menter's first visit to the Walkmühle: in 2012, he created a large sound installation for the themed exhibition Sound consisting of wooden boards suspended outdoors and swaying in the wind. In this context, he also staged his performances Drips of Wood and Life Forms at the Walkmühle. His sound sculpture Inhabitation, now on display in the exhibition, consists of four five-metre-high pyramid-shaped structures made of oak, which together form a pendulum orchestra. A wire is attached to the top of each pyramid, with a weight hanging at the end that strikes four different materials on the floor. The work is conceived as a permanent performance activated by artist Will Menter. It explores constantly changing music created through the interaction of materials processed to varying degrees: from river stones and driftwood to precisely tuned aluminium tubes. |

Cologne-based sound artist Tina Tonagel has also been a guest at Walkmühle on several occasions with her works, performances and workshops. Her sound installation Lithophon was first shown at the Neuer Kunstraum Düsseldorf. Now it is being realised once again at the Walkmühle artists' association on the occasion of the exhibition Und was, wenn es klingt? (And what if it sounds?). The basis is a specially constructed wall, approximately ten metres long and three metres high, on which well over two hundred slate slabs are mounted in a geometric arrangement. Each of the slate slabs can be struck with a small, motor-driven hammer and made to sound. These strikes are controlled by a microcontroller programmed with a fifteen-minute composition that plays in an endless loop. Tonagel's installation is therefore not only an auditory experience but also an extremely aesthetic one.
New York musician Joe Jones was a pioneer of an art form that is now collectively referred to as sound art. As part of the Fluxus movement, his journey took him to many places before finally settling in Wiesbaden, where he spent the last phase of his life. With his method of making simple, commercially available electric motors dance with the aid of a special suspension system, Joe Jones opens up a field for rhythms whose structures oscillate unpredictably between repeatability and variation. The trance-like effect, which arises in particular in conjunction with the Drones, the string instruments he also stimulates with motors, is repeatedly interrupted by surprising pauses, rhythm changes, overlays and variations. Thanks to our good contacts with collector Michael Berger, who owns numerous Music Machines by Joe Jones in Wiesbaden, we will be able to show works by this pioneer of sound art. |
